LAST FLIGHT OF THE MEMPHIS BELLE

In 1942 and '43 the USAAF crews of heavy
bombers based in England had to fly 25
missions in order to complete their tour
of duty and return home. In the end of May
1943 the crew of a B-17 named
"Memphis Belle" was the first to survive
that number of sorties. However their last
mission (also the subject of the 1990
motion picture "Memphis Belle") was one of
their toughest: the target for that the
day was a factory in the German city of
Bremen, a good defended target at that
time. After their escorting fighters had
to turn back home the American flight
suffered losses, including their lead
bomber. Several German fighters were
claimed destroyed. The "Belle" was heavily
damaged in the fighting but made it back
to England. Their completion of 25
missions over enemy territory helped to
build up the morale of the American bomber
crews.

YOUR MISSION

You are, of course, flying the Memphis
Belle as a wingman in a flight of four
B-17s. Your mission starts just as your
"little friends", the P-47s turn home.
Be prepared for heavy enemy fighter
resistance and use the ammo of your gun-
ners economically.
(If you've seen the film, you will know
what to do!)

Difficulty: hard
