BOMB U.S. HELD REIMS AIRFIELD

In the weeks of June and July 1944
after the allied invasion in France it
was ordered by the German High Command
to equip 50 % of the fighter units
which were defending France as fighter-
bombers in order to support the German
army. However, due to complete allied
air superiority there were high losses
but few successes for the Germans.
Allied losses inflicted by these
fighter-bombers were far from serious
and could be easily replaced. In his
memoirs the general of the Luftwaffe's
fighter arm, Adolf Galland, writes
about the invasion-frontline as a
"melting furnace" in which his fighters
were thrown and that all the sorties
flown there had " no other operative
effect save for our fighters and
fighter-bombers being chasen by the
huge allied superiority."
