"POLBIN'S VERTUSHKA"

Maj. Gen. Ivan Semenovich Polbin, famed
commander of the 2nd Guards Bomber Corps,
developed a variation on the "continuous
orbit" ground attack which became known
as the "vertushka," which translates as
"spinner". Basically, it involved a
continuous orbit with target passes
coming from not one but several
directions. This helped to prevent
effective AA fire. Such an attack could
last as long as 20-25 minutes instead of
just the 1-2 minutes of a normal ground
attack.
One such attack was led personally by Gen
Polbin on the 18th of July 1944 against
Germans trapped in the village of Koltow.
Seventeen Pe-2s of the 162nd Guards
Bomber Regiment were accompanied by
Airacobras. The "vertushka" went
smoothly and later inspections showed
that at least 20 tanks, an ammuntion
dump, and a large number of personnel
were destroyed.
