MISSION Y-21-6

At 1830 hours on 16 September 1944, 23 P-
38s of the 428th Fighter Squadron attacked
an enemy fuel dump. Operating with 12
more P-38s as top cover, they attacked two
clusters of large storage tanks with
22x500 lb GP bombs. There were large
explosions but no fires, suggesting empty
or partially filled tanks. At 1915 hours,
going home at 12,000 feet, contrails were
observed at 30,000 feet on an erratic
course, but no direct contact.

               MISSION

Attempt to save the oil tanks and the
precious fuel. Consider it a victory if
you can save one fuel tank in the dump.

                NOTES

Although historically there was no contact
between the jet and the P-38s, what if was
irresistable in this case.
