The Bulge - Offensive Patrol

       Warning (map usable)

On December 16, 1944, the Battle
of the Bulge began as the Germans,
led by Feld-Marschall Gerd von
Rundstedt, launched a major offen-
sive through the Ardennes into
weakly-held American lines. At
first, great gains were made.
One of the biggest contributors
to the opening German success was
the weather, which had grounded
most Allied aircraft. As the wea-
ther cleared, however, Allied sor-
ties increased. The Germans ended
up only being able to move supplies
by night. As a result, P-61s in
both intruder and patrol roles
plyed a major part in slowing the
German drive. P-61s accounted for
7 night aircraft kills during the
Battle of the Bulge. Most of these
were made not only at night, but
also in poor weather.

ORDERS:
You are on patrol from your base at
Coulomiers, France. Conduct an
offensive patrol over the Ardennes,
with the objective of clearing out
German night-fighters so that other
Allied aircraft can conduct noc-
turnal raids on German supply move-
ments.
