In November, 1944, 100 Group was es-
tablished by Bomber Command as a sup-
port formation for the bombing offen-
sive specializing in electronic coun-
termeasures. 100 Group not only jam-
med German early warning (Freya &
Wurzburg) and airborne search (SN-2,
Neptun) radars; it also jammed the
communications of the German ground
controllers. Thus, not only was the
picture of events distorted for the
ground controllers, but the Germans
were also unable to issue instructions
to their night fighter pilots.
100 Group used ECM devices such as
"Jostle," which interrupted German
fighter control frequencies; "Mandrel,"
which jammed early warning radars; and
"Piperack," which jammed German air-
borne radars. Used in combination with
diversionary Mosquito raids, 100 Group
rendered the Nachtjagdkorps incapable of
mounting effective resistance after
November of 1944.
ORDERS: Mandrel jamming has blanketed our
early warning systems, indicating that an
RAF raid is inbound. Our ground control-
lers are not sure about the target, so at-
tempt to differentiate between Mosquito
diversions and the Main Force bombers when
patrolling between Bremen and Kiel.
