On May 29-30, 1943, Wuppertal-
Barman was attacked by Bomber
Command during the "Battle of the
Ruhr." The battle lasted 4 months,
striking Essen first (5-6 March),
and ending at Cologne (28-29 June).
Duisburg, Dusseldorf, Bochum,
Aachen, Krefeld, Dortmund, and
Oberhausen all suffered at least
one attack during this period.
18,506 sorties were flown, 872
bombers were lost (around 6,000
crew <!>), but the Germans had not
been significantly hurt (or at least
not those in power)
The raid on Wuppertal-Barman saw the
debut of the Do217J-2 night fighter.
3 Do217J-2s flew into battle along-
side 13 Bf110s; between them they
accounted for 11 kills after pur-
suing the British out to sea. One of
the slow Dorniers was shot down by
a British intruder while taking off.
ORDERS:
Take off from your airfield (Venlo),
and attack the bomber formation
headed for Wuppertal.
