MARSEILLE AT BIR HACHEIM

On the 3rd of June 1942, Stukas from the
airbase at Derna (StG 3, commanded by
Oberstleutnant Walter Sigel) mounted an
air attack on the fortress of Bir
Hacheim. The second wave of Stukas took
off shortly after noon, and at 12:22
were intercepted by P-40s from the No. 5
(South African) Squadron.
As things were about to go badly for the
Stukas, two Bf109s appeared....the top
ace Hans-Joachim Marseille and his
wingman. Six Allied planes were quickly
shot down. Said his wingman later, "His
judgement of deflection was incredible.
Each time he fired I saw his shells
strike first the enemy plane's nose, then
travel along to the cockpit. No
ammunition was wasted."

MISSION

Lead your rotte from I/JG 27 in to
protect the Stukas from StG 3 as they
attack Bir Hacheim.
