MISSION TO EL IMAYID

At about 1700 hours on 1 September 1942,
Hans-Joachim Maiseille, the "Star of
Afrika," took off on his third mission of
the day. He was escorting Ju-88s to El
Imayid when 15 P-40 Kittyhawks attacked.
The Kittyhawks attacked the bombers just
as they were diving, but Marseille dove
into them and within 6 minutes had shot
down 5 British planes, all at altitudes
of less than 3000 feet. The more amazing
fact is that he had shot down 12 planes
in the previous two sorties, making a
total of 17 for the day, with no losses
to his squadron. It was truly a
remarkable feat.
