"NOT TO BE TRIFLED WITH"

The antiaircraft defenses over Malta had
gotten considerable respect from the
Germans by the spring of 1941. The
commander of III/StG 1 stated simply,
"Their flak was certainly not to be
trifled with." On one mission, Leutnant
Gerhard Stamp of LG 1 took his Ju88 in on
a mission to bomb the Luca airfield at
Malta. Escorted by Bf109s, the six Ju88s
began the "flak waltz" as they weaved
drunkenly downward. Hit by flak in the
undercarriage and flaps, he was jumped by
Hurricanes after the bomb run but the
Bf109s took care of them. Landing at
Catania, Sicily, he came in so fast he
stopped only ten feet from a concrete
wall.

MISSION

Divebomb the airfield at Malta. Watch
for the usual assortment of defending
Hurricanes.
