THE PALM SUNDAY MASSACRE

With the Germans in full retreat and
attempting to escape from North Africa,
the Allies took the opportunity to
interdict the tenuous airbridge between
Italy and North Africa by destroying as
many of the Ju52 transports as they could
find. On April 18, 1943, a force of
about 100 Ju52s with heavy fighter escort
was flying back to Italy when it was
intercepted. The ensuing carnage
resulted in 73 transports and 16 escorts
downed. The so-called "Palm Sunday
Massacre" was followed by several other
intercepts, including a flight of 21 Me-
323 "Gigant" transports, and the end
result was the loss of about 423 aircraft
for the Axis to about 25 Allied losses.
