GROUND ATTACK AT SFAX

Because of its capabilities, the P-38s
found themselves in demand for a wide
variety of missions. One highly disliked
mission was ground attack. Jack Ilfrey
(14th Fighter Group) was on a ground
attack mission against some pillboxes
that guarded a pass near Sfax when his
flight was jumped by German fighters. He
barely made it home, one engine shot out
and the other vibrating badly. Back at
his base, he counted 168 holes in his P-
38 and 8 cannon shell dents in the armor
plate behind his seat in the cockpit.

MISSION

Attack the bunkers at Sfax, but be wary
of enemy fighters. You must destroy at
least 4 buildings in the target area for
this mission to be a success.

NOTES

This is a day mission.
