                The Supermarine Spitfire Mk VC

The Spitfire Mk V came into service in March 1941 as an
improvement over the Battle of Britian veteran, the Mk I.
The Mk V was a major version of the Spitfire, as 6,479 were
built, and was powered by a 1,450 hp Merlin engine. The "C"
designation meant that the "universal" C wing was used, which
could house either 8 x .303 Browning machineguns (300 rpg), 4
x Hispano 20mm cannon, or 2 cannon and 4 machineguns. It
could carry a droptank if necessary. SPECS: Top speed 374
mph at 13,000 feet, 332 mph at sea level, ceiling 35,500
feet, range 470 miles. It was hard to distinguish from the
Mk IX, which came into service in 1942.
