THE KUBAN ESCALATOR

One of Aleksandr I. Pokryshkin's
innovations was the "Kuban Escalator".
Pokryshkin was the commander of the elite
16th Guards Fighter Air Regiment,
equipped with P-39s, and his emphasis on
vertical dispersion led to a formation of
vertically staggered pairs for support,
usually 2,600 to 3,200. Pokryshkin ended
the war as the second ranking ace for the
Soviet Union, with 59 kills.
